Debris pickup begins next week, landfill and repair permit fees waived, residents encouraged to report damage to Tax Office, assistance and volunteer opportunities
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – Below are several updates on relief and recovery efforts in response to Hurricane Isaias:
DEBRIS COLLECTION
New Hanover County will collect vegetative debris from Hurricane Isaias in the unincorporated areas of the county at no cost to residents beginning the week of August 10, 2020. Construction and demolition debris will NOT be collected, however residents can bring storm-related vegetative and construction and demolition debris to the landfill at no cost during regular operating hours. Fees will be waived for individual homeowners and residents who haul their own debris, and does not include companies or commercial haulers.
When cleaning and clearing debris for pick-up, residents are asked to follow these guidelines:
- Separate vegetative debris (branches, leaves, etc.) from other debris and household rubbish. (Construction and demolition debris like tile, carpet, drywall, etc. will NOT be collected)
- Do not place debris in bags
- Pile smaller pieces of debris on top of larger pieces
- Debris should be in pieces no larger than 12 feet in length
- Place piles at least three feet from mailboxes, utility meters, sign posts, and hydrants
- Place piles no further than five feet from the road
- Do not place debris piles directly under power lines
- Try to consolidate piles with neighbors
Residents within the city limits, and in Carolina, Kure and Wrightsville beach, will have their debris picked up by their respective municipality.
DAMAGE REPORTING AND REPAIRS
Residents who sustained property damage from Hurricane Isaias should submit a property damage report to the New Hanover County Tax Department at Tax.NHCgov.com. Properties that have major damage and repairs not completed by December 31, 2020 may be considered for an adjustment for the 2021 tax year. This will not apply to current tax bills, but may apply to tax bills for next year.
Additionally, building permits related to storm damage from Hurricane Isaias will be provided by the county at no cost until further notice. The county’s Building Safety Department at the Government Center is open Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and can be reached at 910-798-7308.
RESOURCES AND ASSISTANCE: CRISIS CLEANUP
Crisis Cleanup connects individuals with volunteers to provide cleanup assistance after a storm like Hurricane Isaias. Beginning Thursday, August 6, residents can call 844-965-1386 to request assistance with cutting fallen trees, tarping, mold mitigation and drywall, flooring and appliance removal.
New Hanover County is also partnering with the New Hanover Disaster Coalition, Cape Fear Food Council and other community partners to ensure residents receive assistance with storm-related needs. For immediate assistance, visit NewHanoverDisasterCoalition.org.

When volunteering, remember these safety tips to prevent the spread of COVID-19:
- Remember the 3 Ws:
- Wear a face covering
- Wait six feet from others, and maintain this distance while doing volunteer work
- Wash your hands regularly
- Avoid physical contact with others outside of your household
- Take regular breaks to wash your hands, stay hydrated and rest
