County to open Landfill Sunday, ban on burning in place

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – The public will be able to bring debris from Hurricane Florence to New Hanover County’s Landfill beginning Sunday, September 16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Normal operating hours at the landfill will resume on Monday, September 17.

In the coming days, after the county completes an assessment of the damage, there will be specific guidance for residents about debris pickup. Information about pickups will be included on the EmergencyNHC.com website and on the county’s social media.

In addition, there is a ban on open burning in the unincorporated areas of New Hanover County until further notice. The ban is in place due to the large amount of storm debris from Hurricane Florence. There is an increased risk for injury and for property damage during this time and the ban will remain in effect while the storm debris removal continues. The burning ban notice can be viewed here.

New Hanover County Emergency Management continues to operate the Emergency Operations Center. Anyone with questions can call the public information hotline telephone number at (910) 798-6800.

The latest information regarding Hurricane Florence can be found on the county’s EmergencyNHC.com website, and on the county’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
